Yes,people can have fun, but also we can talk about how Labubus are a hyper consumerism trend.
$40 for vibes and a dopamine hit
You can’t walk around anywhere without seeing this ugly cute little keychain with it’s vinyl face hanging off a handbag with the holder usually holding an iced matcha in one hand and the iphone16 max in the other.
This isn’t new though,we’ve seen it way before there was tik tok or any kind of social media. Cabbage Patch Kids were being collected by kids, teens, and adults alike. The same went with the Beanie Babies craze that my mom also took part of while she was well into her 20s.
Labubus seemed like they came out of nowhere and now are everywhere, thanks to BlackPink’s Lisa, which you don’t know is a very famous K-pop group (I personally do not like k-pop or understand the hype but I digress). Basically, if any k-pop idol shows any interest in anything, and it makes it to western audiences, then it will probably be the “it” item for a bit or until something new comes about.
People’s cars are getting broken into for these toys. Yes. Broken in cars, an actual crime, for these collectible toys. Obviously, to many, it is more than a toy, it is a hit of dopamine and status symbol. How many can you get from Pop-Mart? You stood in this line?
No. There’s nothing wrong with having interests, hobbies or passions. However, a lot of the collectible and trinkets seemed to be fueled by consumerism instead of out of a genuine interest. Of course social media plays a lot into this over consumption, and seems to be speeding up the planet’s decay.
The question for you, yes you reading.
The question for you, yes, you reading, is do you actually like Labubus or do you like it because other people like them? Are you still going to be collecting them when everyone else chucks them out for the next big thing? Or will you too join in the next dopamine hit fad?
These are questions everyone should consider, because quite frankly, it is just being aware of an individual’s consumer habits. This can translate into smarter and better financial outcomes in the long run. I am being so serious when I say that Labubus are a perfect example of hive-mind mentality and a classic textbook case of FOMO.
No, you are not a bad person if you are into the Labubu craze. No I am not better than you because I particiapte in other trinket collections from time to time. I just personally cannot justify a $40-$80 purchase on a toy.Sometimes, I feel like I am the only one seeing this for the over hyped trend it is, and it makes me feel crazy! lol
That translates into my mind, clothes for my baby, diapers, maybe even food from my favorite niche little grocery store here in LA. I don’t know if it is because this gen-z(er) is a mom now, but I just can’t understand the hype and craze of this little trinket.
Plain absurdity: enter religious “viewpoints”
Now on way, wayyyy other side of this spectrum we have people who believe these little monster dolls are demonic. Que the religious psychosis of people commenting “I claim no negative energy from this video” and the thread of comments literally just repeating “AMEN” 100 comments on. I can see how religious people see this doll as maybe something “Demonic” because of its appearance and the way that people are going insane and showing weird behavior with these dolls.
Some Facts about Labubus and Lafufus
Labubus have their own lore to them which I think is really cute and interesting that they are actually inspired by Nordic Mythology and had their own picture book from 2015. Labubus fall under “The Monsters” and are Pop Mart’s best selling franchise, again thanks to the influence of Lisa from Black Pink. We also now are seeing Lafufus, which are said to be knock offs of Labubus and are quite cheaper allowing a broader demographic to be able to take part of this craze.
Now, I know that overconsumption is a buzzword being thrown around every chance some tik toker who boast 100k can get, however it is really there, and Labubus are overconsumption. People on tik tok stating their views on Labubus are very black and white and hardly contain an nuance. It’s either “Why can’t you just let people enjoy things??” or “You are a terrible person for contributing to this consumerism mind set” or a better word, social media consumption, I think may be a bit more appropriate.
I really hope that we can be more mindful of our consumption, as this really impacts each and everyone of us.Again, this isn’t to shame anyone, or act morally superior, it is to have a real conversation about we are constantly being fed by the superficial world of social media.
